October 2021 – February 2022 Update

We have been quiet for a while, staff was highly busy with other real-life nonsense! Despite that, a lot has been going on ‘under the hood’ in regards to organizing our internal development systems and developing a backstory for future quest lines. We are happy to also announce some code/world improvements we have been able to deliver in this long winter.

Major changes include:

Lich – the Pinnacle of Necromantic Art

Few creatures are more feared than the lich. The pinnacle of
necromantic art, who has chosen to shed his life as a method to cheat death by
becoming undead. While many who reach such heights of power stop at nothing to
achieve immortality, the idea of becoming a lich is abhorrent to most creatures.
The process involves the extraction of one’s life force and imprisonment in a
specially prepared phylactery. One gives up life, but in trapping life he also
traps his death, and as long as his phylactery remains intact he can continue on
in his research and work without fear of the passage of time. The quest to
become a lich is a lengthy one. While construction of the magical phylactery to
contain one’s soul is a critical component, a prospective lich must also learn
the secrets of transferring his soul into the receptacle and of preparing his
body for the transformation into undeath, neither of which are simple tasks.
Further complicating the ritual is the fact that no two bodies or souls are
exactly alike, a ritual that works for one spellcaster might simply kill another
or drive him insane. Please note that a Lich is the only Epic Race that can
multi-class. Please note that becoming a lich requires level 30 and will reset
your exp to 0. Please note that a Lich has all the advantages/disadvantages of
being Undead.

       Insidious rumors have begun that Caltursar the Dead Walker, a necrophant that resides in the 
       Skull Gorge has discovered the dark art of becoming a LICH.  Perhaps one could ASK him about 
       'undeath' to reveal what sort of necormantic madness he has tapped into.  (note: the quest 
       line to become a lich is extremely difficult and designed for elite groups to conquer)

Some of the lich features include: vital (bonus starting hp), hardy (bonus hp per level), armor skin +5 (natural AC), ultravision, is-undead, damage resistance +4, and unarmed combat proficiency… in addition:

Lich racial adjustment to stats are: +2 dexterity, +2 constitution, +2 charisma, and +6 intelligence. In addition, they get class abilities of acrobatics and +8 racial bonus on Perception, Sense Motive, and Stealth checks

Due to their undead magical nature, Lich have a strong natural resistance to magic. A Lich’s spell resistance is equal to 15 + their level.

Liches have unarmed damage of 2d4 + level / 2. They can use ‘lichtouch’, as a standard action, to paralyze and cause negative damage 10 + level 4 + int bonus… this touch used on undead heals double that amount. This is usable 3x a day + int bonus

A lich upon being the target of a death blow will automatically be fully restored. This represents the power of their phylactery. A lich can only tap upon this awesome power 1x per day.

The countenance of a Lich is so intimidating that one can cause fear (spell-like affect) up to 3x/day.

Completely immune to attacks based on electricity.

Completely immune to attacks based on cold.

September 2021 Update – Assassins

After a restful summer, development is back on at LuminariMUD! In addition to a number of game and class improvements, we’ve also added the Assassin class. Assassins, in addition to added sneak attack damage, also gains the abiltiy to mark an opponent by observing them for a few rounds. Once marked, the target becomes open to a number to added affects to the existing backstab commands, including added chance to hit and damage, invisibility, extra attacks and more.

 of positive energy, bestow weapon proficiency.  Help files added for all of them.
   Caster levels for ranger, paladin and blackguard changed from class level / 2 to class level - 4
 (min 0).
   Added automated happy hour notifications o the discord channel.
   Changed Monk BAB progression from medium to high.
   Adjusted base attack bonus calculation (BAB).  BAB progression from levels 1-20 is based on the
 class type.  BAB 21 and higher is a flat +1 regardless of class.
   Added inside room sector type to allow for differentiating hallways from rooms on the mini map.
   Fixed the charge command so that if the target you specify is not in the room, it will cancel the
 charge instead of making the charge effect take place, forcing the charger to wait a few seconds 
 before charging again.
   Added mob flags allowing mobs to prevent movement in a specific direction, also optionally
 allowing to only block based on a class type, or minimum level, or alignment.
   Added a new object type: outfit crates.  These crates allow the possesser to specify a specific
 armor type or weapon type that the crate will dispense. HELP OUTFIT.
   Fixed the hidden nature of secret door.  Cannot be interacted with or seen unless discovered with
 the search command (which uses Perception skill).
   Included more information when using the lore command on mobs.
   Added mob flag allowing a mob to be treated like an object in certain ways.  Useful for quest mobs
 that take shape as an object, like a bulletin board.

June 2021 Update – Blackguards

June brings another new base class: the Blackguard. Also known as an AntiPaladin, the blackguard is indeed the anti-thesis of the traditional paladin. He is able to inflict damage and negative effects with a simple touch, cast a number of buffing and debuffing spells, imbue his weapon with various special abilities and channel negative energy to harm living foes and heal undead allies. He is a fearsome warrior who strikes fear and weakness in those he calls foe.

There have also been some enhancements with paladins, some new building tools to speed up area creation and a number of bug fixes and quality-of-life improvements.

  Blackguard has been added as a base class, with 30 levels to take.
   Abilities include: smite good, touch of corruption, cruelties, 
   unholy warrior, unholy champion, plague bringer, fiendish boon,
   and the following auras: evil, cowardice, despair, vengeance, sin
   and depravity.  Check the help files on blackguard, and the abilities
   listed above, as well as class feats blackguard.
  Paladins have been given some new abilities.  A respec will be necessary.
   Auras of justice, faith and righteousness.  Holy warrior and holy champion.
  Both Blackguards and Paladins, as well as clerics, now use channel energy in
   place of turn undead and command undead.  Neutral clerics need to choose 
   whether they will devote to positive or negative energy. Channeling
   positive energy will heal living creatures in the area and damage undead.
   Channeling negative energy will damage living creatures and heal undead.
   All of these classes will need to respec to obtain the channel energy ability.
  The sickened status affect has been added.  See help sickened.
  Some new commands were added for building zones more efficiently: setroomsector,
   setroomname, setroomdesc.

  Improved feint feat now gives +4 to the feint check and halves penalties for attempts to feint low-intelligence or non-humanoid targets.
  The feint command is now a swift action instead of a standard action.
  Paladins no longer use wisdom for their spellcasting, and use charisma instead
  Arcane Archers can now imbue arrows in a worn quiver or other type of ammo pouch
  Fixed a bug where paladin fast healing mercy was being treated as a violent affect, causing it to be removed by the ensorcelled mercy.

May 2021 Update – Shadowdancers

May brings to LuminariMUD a new prestige class: the Shadowdancer. Combining the benefits of rogue skills, shadow magic, their own shadow companion and more, the shadow dancer is a valuable choice for rogues looking for a tank and dip into conjuration and evocation magic.

Building efforts continue, with both high level and end game zones being the focus. Short term coding plans include improving our quest system and the wild shape / shifter systems.

April 2021 Update – Psionicists & Game Balancing

April sees the result of many weeks of work in the launch of our new base class, the Psionicist.

Psionicists are similar to other casters, but instead of using spell memorization or spell slots like wizards and sorcerers, they use power points, which is similar, but not the same, as mana in classic diku-style muds.

Psionicists have their own list of powers, the psionic version of spells, that is completely separate from arcane and divine spell lists. This launch includes more than 80 powers across 9 manifestation levels. One of the unique things about psionic powers is the ability to augment most of them. By spending extra power points when they manifest a power, the psionicist can make their manifestations more powerful, and in some cases offer additional scope or functionality.

The new class also came with 27 new feats, some of which can be taken by non-psionicists.

We’ve also implemented a system of variables that can be easily adjusted in-game, without the need for editing code or doing reboots/copyovers. As a result of some balance concerns voiced by some of our players, we decided to implement this system, so that we can easily adjust numbers on-the-fly when testing or player experience reveals issue in game balance.

We’ve implemented some of those balance changes already, including the following:

  • Arcane spell damage increased by 50%
  • Arcane, Divine and Alchemy spell preparation time reduced by 33%.
  • Difference in level between player and mob to receive exp increased from 3 to 5.
  • Level 1-10 summons: 200% hp, 125% ac, hitroll and damroll.
  • Level 11-20 summons: 125% hp, 110% ac, hitroll and damroll.
  • Level 21-30 summons: 75% hp and ac, 67% hitroll and damroll.
  • Player death exp penalty lowered to 50% normal.

We also added a variable for the armour class cap, which currently sits at 65, and seems to be a good number based on recent testing done in the past couple of weeks by staff and some players. But it can be easily adjusted if need be.

We also have a new end game zone in the works. We were finding that some of our level-capped players were getting frustrated with the huge difficulty increase against end game mobs at level 30. As a result we’re going to be implementing a series of end game zones over time, that will offer better gear in stages, similarly to many MMOs and probably MUDs out there do. Right now, unless the player has done extensive exploring and personal play testing, level 30 end game difficulty is a bit of a wall. We’re trying to address that with this new zone. We expect the new zone to be done for our next monthly update.

  Added alchemy mem times as a player variable to the staff 'cedit' command.

  Fixed a bug where arcane spell damage variable in cedit wasn't saving properly.
  Enhanced spell damage feat can now be taken up to 3 times.
  Added the Empowered magic feat, which can be taken up to 3 times.

  Rangers who have the qualifying feats and dexterity, may purchase the perfect dual weapon fighting feat if they wish. They get it automatically at level 21, but this allows multi-class rangers to obtain it as well with a normal epic feat point.
