So I have been going over all of the special attacks as part of the feat migration. It appears to me that there will be a number of ‘Special attack types’ that we can describe:
1.) Enhanced extra attacks – These are real time, ‘pull the trigger’ types of attacks. Things like trip, shieldpunch, etc. perform an action instantly, and usually gain an attack. These can be used between rounds, etc. and as such can be very sensitive to timing.
2.) Melee trigger attacks – These are attacks where the command is entered, and the next melee attack is enhanced in some way. Examples are smite and stunning fist. Generally you have a short time after setting the attack to attempt a melee strike before the attempt fails. if the melee strike is unsuccessful or no melee strike is attempted before the trigger expires, the special attack is still considered ‘used’.
3.) Combat modes – These are modes, set at any time, that affect normal melee attacks in some way. Examples are power attack, parry and combat expertise. Some modes may preclude others, while some stack. Modes may have specific criteria that must be met before they are activated.
In general, all special attacks on Luminari will fall into one of these three categories. Comments?
